The word 'Phuket' was formally believed to to have come from the Malaysian word 'Bukit', which means a mountain. However, it has recently been realised that Phuket is actually a Thai word meaning mountain (phu) of jewel (ket).
Formerly known as Koh (island) Thalang, Phuket was noted for its rich tim ores, from which its wealth was originally derived. Today it is better known as a tourist paradise. With its magnificant long white beaches, its luxuriant vegitation, its crystal blue sea water, its fantastic underwater scenery, its calm and relaxing tropical atmosphere; and its fresh prawns, lobsters and other kinds of seafood, Phuket entices many travellers over and over again. |
