Backgammon is a board game for two players in which pieces are moved according to the roll of the two dice. The first player to remove all of his own pieces from the board wins.
Although the game has a significant random element, backgammon offers a significant scope for strategy. With each roll of the dice, a player must choose from numerous options for moving the pieces and plan for possible counter-moves by the opponent. Opportunities for raising the stakes of the game introduce more strategic
complexities. Like chess and bridge, backgammon has been studied deeply by computer scientists. Indeed, computer research has proven some well-established opening moves to be inferior. Computer software develpoment has led to backgammon programs capable of beating world-class human players.
