Four way transfers - transfers to the minors |
Most people these days play Jacoby transfers over partner's 1NT opening, i.e.: - |
1NT - 2♦ is a transfer to 2♥ |
and |
1NT - 2♥ is a transfer to 2♠ |
So 2♠ is not needed as a natural bid. Playing 4-way transfers 2♠ is used as a transfer to ♣'s and 2NT is used as a transfer to ♦'s. Thus the complete scheme of transfers over partner's 1NT opening is: - |
2♦ |
= |
transfer to ♥'s |
2♥ |
= |
transfer to ♠'s |
2♠ |
= |
transfer to ♣'s |
2NT |
= |
transfer to ♦'s |
So playing 4-way transfers you cannot invite with 2NT directly (as that is now a transfer to ♦'s) and so that is done via a 2♣ bid. This use of 2♣ is all fully covered in section 2.2 of the NT bidding book (pdf or Word doc format). |
The use of 2♠ and 2NT as transfers to the minors is covered in chapter 4 of the NT bidding book (pdf or Word doc format). |
