GNATS – God Not Another Transfer System.

GNATS is a transfer system whereby all opening bids form 1 to 1 are artificial. The one-level opening bids are: -

1 = 15+; c's or d's or balanced
1 = 11+; 5+ h's
1 = 11+; 5+ s's
1 = 11-14; clubs or diamonds, unbalanced
1NT = 11-14; balanced

One of the main benefits of playing transfers is the strong hand (usually opener) gets to be declarer; I simply cannot see the benefits of this system unless it is to disrupt the opponents. It is only licensed in top level competitions.

The system was devised by Barry Regal and if you really want to know more about it is described in the October 1996 edition of Bridge World magazine.
