Dave’s Column           Here is Dave’s first input on the play of the hand.

West                East                              West            North       East            South

75                 A83                         -                   -               1              pass

K84              A10962                    2                pass         2              pass

AKJ43          6                               3                pass         4

653              AJ82

South leads the Q. Declarer can expect four trump tricks, two ’s, two black aces and a ruff in dummy. How should declarer plan the play for ten tricks?

.

Dave’s Column answer                      Board 26 from Wednesday 30th

Dealer:             K94                                            Book bidding

653                                    AJ82              South leads the Q. Declarer can expect   four

QJ1062                                trump tricks, two ’s, two black aces and a

Q5                                        ruff in dummy. How should declarer plan the

872                                      play for ten tricks?

Q104

Declarer should duck the first , making sure that he can ruff a in dummy at the time he chooses. (It’s not an essential play as the cards lie on this deal but ducking is correct technique). Declare then wins the next , takes the AK to discard a and ruffs a . He cashes the AK and ruffs another .

Since the ’s have split 4-3 declarer can now ruff a and discard another on the good 5th as North ruffs. The defense get one trump, one and one .

Declarer succeeds with good timing.

And what happened at the Pattaya bridge club? 4=, 4-1 four times, 4-2 three times.

Dave’s 2nd Column   Here is Dave’s second problem, this time on defence.

Dealer:             109                                             Book Bidding

South               Q72                                            West          North         East          South

Love all            Q102                                         -                 -                 -               2NT

                        QJ983                                        pass           3NT           all pass

N               Q732                  You are East. Partner leads the J and

W    E            963                    declarer wins with the A. Declarer then

                              S                96                      leads the K, West playing the 5.

                                                A764                  Plan the defense.

Dave’s 2nd Column answer              Board 27 from Wednesday 30th

Dealer:             109                                             Book Bidding

South               Q72                                            West          North         East          South

Love all            Q102                                          -                 -                 -               2NT

                        QJ983                                        pass           3NT           all pass

AJ86                   N               Q732                  You are East. Partner leads the J and

J1084             W    E            963                    declarer wins with the A. Declarer then

8753                   S                96                      leads the K, West  playing the 5. What do

5                                          A764                  you do?

K54

AK5

AKJ4

K102

If you decide to duck the K, how many ’s do you intend to duck? Note that with this layout ducking twice would be fatal. Allowing declarer to get home with three ’s, two ’s and four ’s (if declarer had a 5-card suit then ducking a just once would be fatal).

West is marked with 6-7 points on the auction. If he began with the KJ10xx, he could hold no more than a king outside and declarer would have nine tricks if you return a .

To set the contract you need to win the A quickly and switch to the Q; a low will not work - declarer will duck to dummy’s 109 preserving the stopper. To neutralize the power of dummy’s spots you must smother them by leading the Q and hope that partner has the necessary holding to enable four winners in the suit.

And what happened at the Pattaya bridge club? 3NT+2 once, 3NT+1 twice, 3NT=twice and 3NT-1 three times
