Dave’s Column           Here is Dave’s first input on the play of the hand.

West                East                                  West            North         East          South

A63              1087                             -                   -                1NT         pass

QJ                A72                              2NT             pass           3NT         all pass

J6432            AK

654              AJ1093

You are East, declarer in 3NT. South leads a 4th best 4 and dummy’s Q wins, North playing a discouraging 5. The suit is a better source of tricks than ’s so declarer leads a from dummy to his J and it wins, South playing the 7.

How does declarer get to dummy to take another finesse?

Dave’s Column answer                      Board 14 from Wednesday 10th

Dealer:             KQ752                                       Book bidding

East                  965                                             West          North         East            South

Love all            9                                                -                 -                 1NT           pass

                        KQ82                                        2NT           pass           3NT           all pass

A63                    N             1087               You are East. South leads a 4th best 4 and

QJ                  W    E          A72                dummy’s Q wins, North playing a discouraging

J6432                  S              AK                5. The suit is a better source of tricks than

654                                    AJ1093          ’s so declarer leads a from dummy to his J

J9                                         and it wins, South playing the 7.

K10843                                How does declarer get to dummy to take another

Q10875                                finesse?

7

The answer is that declarer does not go to dummy, he leads the 10 from his hand. He is missing the K,Q so he has one loser for sure. By keeping his entries to dummy intact (to say nothing of exposing the hand to the suit) declarer can give up a trick before squandering his only entry to dummy.

What will happen is that North will win a trick but declarer can later go to dummy to take the proven finesse.

And what happened at the Pattaya bridge club? A very mixed bag: 3NT*-3, 3NT-5, 3NT-1, 3(N)=, 3(N)*-2, 3-2, 3=, 1NT+2 and 1NT+1. So the board was played ten times and nobody bid and made 3NT.

Dave’s 2nd Column         Here is Dave’s second problem on the play of the hand.

N                 KJ8                      West        North       East          South

W      E            109                       -               -               -               1

    S                  J1093                  pass         1NT         pass         2NT

                        K732                   pass         3NT         all pass

A7542

KQ5

A85

A4

You are East, defending 3NT, and lead an obvious J, dummy plays the A and partner discourages. Next comes the A and a , partner playing the J and 10 (standard count), declarer the 5 and Q. What are you going to do?

Dave’s 2nd Column answer              Board 15 from Wednesday 10th

Dealer:             Q                                                Book Bidding

South               6432                                           West          North         East            South

N-S vul            KQ4                                          -                 -                 -                 1

                        Q9865                                       pass           1NT           pass           2NT

pass           3NT           all pass

10963                 N             KJ8

AJ87              W    E          109                 You are East and lead an obvious J, dummy

762                     S              J1093             plays the A and partner discourages. Next

J10                                     K732             comes the A and a , partner playing the J

A7542                                  and 10 (standard count), declarer the 5 and Q.

KQ5                                    What are you going to do?

A85

A4

From partner’s discouraging at trick one you should know that declarer has the KQ, so three tricks. From the play of the ’s declarer must have Q9865, so a total of four tricks after you win the K. With the A in dummy it can’t be right to switch to a no matter how good partner’s ’s are – you will be establishing declarer’s 9th trick. You must switch to a and play partner for four ’s. And just in case declarer’s hoped-for singleton is the Q you should play the K after winning the K. Also, it would be unwise to duck the K as on the next partner may discard a from 109xx which happens to be the setting trick.

And what happened at the Pattaya bridge club? 3NT= four times, 3NT-1 twice, 3NT-2 twice, 3NT-3 and 4-2.
